October 09, 2003 : the month of months
It's already been October for some while now. I've already managed to ride my bike to "work" every day (except one) for three weeks now and I'm sure that the exercize is making inroads/headway into my "slimmer version" of me.
Today is actually the second day that I haven't riden my bike to work. It was raining so terribly today when we got out of bed, that there was no way that I saw myself trudging through the slippery streets on two wheels in the downpour.
I took the tram.
This could probably turn into a short story of some sort. The tram wasn't packed, but every seat was filled. Ordinarily I suppose that would be considered "packed tram" but packed here means standing amidst elbows.
I took my seat next to a lady and held my umbrella between my knees. I started my mp3 player and tuned everyone out except for the people in front of me. I also turned off my mobile phone. I'm always terrified that I'll be the person annoying the entire tram with my phone going off and that I'd be oblivious to the entire situation.
The tram's windows were so fogged over, the only person that could see was the driver...and as it was one of Antwerp's above-only trams, sorta pill-shaped, we drove through the streets in a pod, with people barely knowing when to get get off or if they needed to start preparing their baby carriage for take-off.
Above my music, I could tell that the lady in front of me was sort of paniking at every stop, trying to wipe away foggy condensation from the windows, knowing full well that in the time it took to wipe, look and get to door, that it was cutting it a bit close. Finally she asked me, "where is the museum?" And I told her in my best dutch to wait until my stop, and that she couldnt' miss it on her left. (well she could in this case, sort of)
It's the first time I've taken the tram to work, and although I'm still a fan of my good ol' bike, well I must admit that the tram on a rainy day (or a cold one) is a nice alternative to the great Antwerpen outdoors. :)
