As of the begining of March, Eva and I could officially get married here in Belgium. We have opted not to do so, as we spent so much energy and time into getting our partnership papers together, that we'll be happy to simply be partnered! The partnership, much like the marriage is only recognized in countries where it is legal but is a great alternative to wedding vows. I'll get a piece of paper, legal status here, and all the goodies that come with being pseudo-Belgian which is actually a long list of plusses. For those of you curious as to what I think about the gay-marriage issue currently raging in the states--sometimes equality on paper preceeds equality in society and most of the time it needs to. Just ask any minority in the US or any woman. This very well could be the deciding factor in where Eva and I live in the future--all of it is hanging on the fingertips of a few conservative men in suits. What I don't currently get at the moment, is how people voted into office forget the other half who didn't vote them into office! Maybe the word representative should be replaced with something a bit more fitting like "elected person".
